It seems like I've been seeing a lot of posts like this lately. Someone apparently has an unused tank, and would like to know what kind of animal they can put in it.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't really seem like a good approach to keeping herps (or any other creatures, for that matter). If all you want to do is keep the tank from going unused and taking up space in your home, maybe selling it is a better option than just throwing in some random animal. If you have no particular desire to keep a snake, frog, turtle, etc., then chances are you won't be putting the time, effort, and money into properly caring for the animal(s).

I'm sorry if you don't actually fall into this category, but that's how your question came across to me. While having enough space and an appropriate enclosure is certainly important, it shouldn't be the primary factor in getting a new pet.

Buying a reptile and putting it in a setup that is too small because noone would help them is worse..Getting advice on a forum about what would be good for a setup that is already available is a smart thing to do.
I am sure some people do what you say but some dont and all questions should be answered in a polite manner, otherwise people will not go to forums and ask questions and end up with pets that are getting substandard care.
Anyway from what I see a forty gallon with a light that strong might be good for a Uromastyx from what ive read but I would ask on that board first because Im not sure.

I thought it was a 150watt lightbulb..I dont use 40gal's so Im not sure what temps a 150w ceramic bulb would do in a tank that size...My opinion is to set it up and find out then figure out what you want...

Or get a rheostat to adjust at will. Though it'd have to be some reptile that doesn't need UV. 40 gallon w secure lid, ceramic heating element and rheostat would make a handsome set up for a small-medium north american colubrid such as a corn. Or maybe a king or western hognose.

I wouldn't put a uro in a 40....I have one in that size (she's WC) and I'm not real happy with it, and she's not even very big. SHe's also tough to deal with, very skittish and I've had no luck taming her, so CB is best, but the uro forum would most likely recommed at least a 55, 90 gal would be preferred
