sulcatta problem

ygroughneck Jul 12, 2003 06:34 PM

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew what sulcatta urine could mean. One of my sulcattas has this goopy white urine. I have had her or him (i cant tell yet) for about 4 years now. My other sulcatta isnt showing this kind of urine. They are housed seperatly. If anyone could tell me what this means i would really appreciate it. Thanx guys!

The white urine is called urates. It is perfectly normal.

Each tortoise has the ability to store water in its bladder. Some tortoises conserve water so heavily that urine is expelled in the form of thick white goo (urates). Others expell water without conserving any. It will then just look like urine. Foods that have a high water content will produce a large amount of urine, while foods such as grass have very little water content, and will usually produce urates. It depends on the tortoise, and how much its body wants to conserve, and the foods it has access to. After drinking, tortoises always empty their bladder to make room for the new water.

If you haven't changed the diet and you haven't seen this before it is a good indication that it is heading towards dehydration. The more fluid it is the better.
