please help! 2 q's.. housing and dragon size.

breathingbywires May 25, 2005 11:55 AM

1. I've posted before about my dragon and his size. I got him in January and now I'm realizing he wasn't eating much ect because it was brumation time for my dragon. But now.. (keep in mind I didn't know how old he was when I got him just a baby though) I've had him since January and he is only 7.5 inches long! Is this normal? He eats like a PIG and goes to the bathroom just fine, has all his proper lights and heat sources ect. He's shed a few times which tells me he's growing but I'm just a worried "mom" all around about all 9 of my animals.

2. Right now he's just in a 20gal until he gets larger he seems to grow better in a smaller tank then the larger one for now. However I've got a 4 foot long 2 feet wide and 4 foot tall terrium I've made along time ago for my leo's. However I'm looking to cut that down and rebuild a new one. I only ever plan on housing one beardie.. what is a good size to custom build my new tank for him for when he is full grown. Thanks

Hi Kayla,
Have you had a fecal done on him? He should be much bigger by now. Also you mention brumation. In my experience I've never seen or heard of a baby brumating...this is their time for growth, not for shutting down. I've never even read anything about a dragon brumating before their first year is finished. Does anyone else have anything else to add to this?
Anyway, I would definitely get a fecal done if you haven't already because this doesn't sound normal.
Also...a good tank size would be 48Lx18Wx18H. That's the minimum I would do but of course you could always go bigger. Definitely keep him in the 20 for now.
Keep us posted,
-Nicky

Yah I have an appointment at a vet for Friday for my little guy that specializes in Reps and other Exotics.

So you'd say 4 feet long.. I've heard I could cut it down to 3 feet (36inches) and it be large enough. But if your saying keep the extra foot I will.

you could always partition it somehow if you want and when hes older open up more room? Maybe even make a divider.

yah i'm just going to rebuild. keep the lenght and cut down to 24 inches tall and deep instead of 36 inches deep and 48 inches tall like it currently is

i'm more worried about his size right now.

The tank you have is actually perfect, pretty much all you have to do is divide it in half height wise, so it's 2'wide, 2' high and 4' long. That is pretty much the minimum size tank for an adult dragon.

As for brumation in the first year, mind went into brumation at about 9-10 months of age but she was over 16" at that time, then grew a few more inches aftr waking up from brumation.

Usually an oral antibiotic. It could be a couple different ones, depending on what he has. I hope everything turns out ok.
