I'm sure time will tell when it comes to that little guy, but I put $10 on it being egg stress.
I personally believe it should be culled. Wow, to put money as your number one and try and propagate a "trait" like that. . .sick.
Thats where it would go if it were up to me....

That snake looks like something from another planet! Not my thing, main reason I like pythons is because of their neat looking pits. That animal may be one that needs to grow on you for you to like it. Aquire a taste for it. As for now it's not my cup of tea.

Interesting the negative reaction this little ball has generated. Would you believe some people would have killed the Super Stripe when it first hatched?
It's definately strange. I've never seen a snake without scales before. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like as time progresses.
Peace,

Would you believe some people would have killed the Super Stripe when it first hatched?
What's a "Super Stripe"??
"you would have killed it"...yea....right........sure.we believe that.
it's odd........yep.....
anyways........there are already scaleless snakes and backward scaled snakes out there.......they are usually genetic...and usually I would bet not really 100% healthy....but it is in a cage with a heat tape so it will do fine...
scaleless.......
backward scaled.........
bald chickens....
chickens with feathers on backwards.....
......kind of similar...........
........like noone ever paid hundreds for a skinny pig either......
.........
.............

wow.....did you think of that all by yourself?.....
better take a break ................
Would the folks slam this animal if VPI, SK, Ralph, NERD owned this animal? Just a thought!

Yeah Rick, they probably would. These peoples opinions of weather or not they like the snake aren't going to change. A snake with an anatomical deformity isn't exactly something you WANT to hatch every day....
But then, those breeders would have thought it was an oddity... possibly bred it, but more likely given it to one of their kids as a pet. I KNOW they wouldn't have sold it to the highest bidder, thats for darn sure.
What some folks want may be different then what others want.
I like the paradox albino......I think it is unique. Love to have one in my collection. "FREAK" You bet.......

Hey, be nice. The paradox is very sensitive Rick. Calling him a freak really hurts his feelings. LOL

Does it matter who produced it?
To me it does not, I would put it down IF it has troubles of any kind.
Either way, that animal should NOT be bred.....EVER....

Then I should kill a blind gray banded king?
I feed it each week.

I haven't read all the responses but I thought I'd reply to yours Al. Why do you feel so strongly that it should be culled? How is it different than any other morph out there? It's genetic mutations that cause color and pattern variations, so why does this one upset everyone? If it eats, sheds and lives a healthy life then why should it be viewed any differently than any other morph?
This isn't just a mutation that effects an animals ability to camoflage itself, this is something that effects the animals ANATOMY!!! You're comparing apples to oranges. If the baby had a normal skin, but a deformed spine, it would either be culled, or considered a pet.... you wouldn't breed it.
This just happens to be a deformity that looks cool, like polydactyly (extra toes) in cats. It is yet to be seen if the mutation/deformity causes any problems in feeding, shedding, or otherwise living a QUALITY life. Until these things have been determined, it should not be sold to the highest bidder, and neither should its offspring.
it might help to do some simple research via google for "scaleless snake"
http://www.herper.com/strange/scalelesspics.html
BTW, I HAVE heard of scaleless snakes before. If it is something genetic, it's only a matter of time before it becomes a new, sought after morph.
If snakes like this can live normal lives, which it seems like they can, then the mutation really IS no different than albinism, etc.
BTW, some would argue that breeding albinos is a bad thing. Albinism can cause other problems. Supposedly albino snakes are sensitive to light, etc. If that's true, what quality of life do THOSE albinos have.
Truly, I think this is only a cosmetic "defect," same as albinism and unusual patterns.
Kinked spines and true physical deformations are a different story entirely.
IT HAS NO HEAT PITS.
If it were just the scaless, then yeah, its a cool mutation that I would love to have.
However, it has no heat pits as well. Therefore, this animal has MULTIPLE CONGENITAL DEFECTS.... what else is it hiding? We need to find out in a responsible manner, not just breed it and sell it to every joe shmoe who wants one.
are you guys completely missing the point, or do I have to hit you over the head with it???
Sure Alinda.......
Kill all morphs!
Only normals in my home!
Give the animal a chance.
I am putting down my pieds as I write this!

Where did I say to kill it? Nowhere...
I just said that it has congenital defects, and it shouldn't be bred like its the next new co-dom. Breeding bad genes into the lines is not a good thing, especially with as much linebreeding that is done...
A six toed cat that is.She and her brother were both born with double "thumbs".While his inner thumbs were gimplike, hers are FULLY functional.lol

" How is it different than any other morph out there? "
WELL, lets see, it has no pits, and is missing MOST OF ITS SCALES........Enough said, I thought so.................................................................................

Prehistoric Pets has a two headed King, why not just kill that one to.
Are they trying to breed the two-headed snake??? Does everyone and their brother want one???
Well, I heard they got offered a hell of alot of money for it. And I think they did breed it and found that it wasn't genetic.
they don't know who owns it......
well.someone does........
I don't care.....too many colors and patterns to buy and make yet before I get a baldheaded ophidian...

But I would never pay big bucks for it either. It is an intersting look and a fascinating snake. Like MissKiwi mentioned it would be nice to see this animal in the hands of a responsible breeder, or maybe even a University biology program.... It would be interesting to find out if the lack of scales does in fact detract from it's heat sensing ability or if it does have trouble shedding..... Unfortunatly none of those things will ever be measured...... Instead it will be stuffed full of rat pups until it reaches breeding age at about 6 months old, then it will be passed around amongst a couple of dozen females. None of which have been selected for their docile temperament or their willingness to feed on any prey item whether mouse or rat, frozen or live.... And they won't be selected by their bright colors or their clean patterns..... Instead they will be selected for their ability to lay eggs....... and for no other reason what-so-ever...... Then the resulting progeny will be sold as 'hets' (even though unproven) for enough bucks to make the owner comfortable for the rest of his life..... And he will probably get the money too..... because ballpythons are all about the money...... You know this is true..... Though kind of sad really......

Rick is a little slow.....................

Hell if it looks that good as an adult then yes I would buy one if it was genetic.
Cant believe the negative posts above. Crazy
I also cant believe all the negative posts. From both the owner and some of the others. I dont know who the owner is, maybe he was having a really bad day? Why is everybody so rude and mean to each other?? I dont think it was a good idea to promote it the way he did but...... I do love the way the snake looks. Should we kill off all the hairless dogs, cats, rats? People like them, like the way they look, and want them as pets. Which would have a better chance surviving in the wild? A lucy or a partially scaleless ball? If it is healthy, feeds, breeds.....and is genetic, it WILL sell, and people will want it. Its odd, its weird looking, and some people like that.
Bryan
MeanPeopleSuck
you summed it up quite well...mean people suck & the internet is full of them.
You know what they say about opinions, right? Opinions are like...
Albinos will go blind when exposed to too much sunlight.
But that is ok, because balls are nocturnal, right?
Maybe we should cross the scaleless with albino, take it back to Africa and release it into the wild ! ! !
Second thought, maybe we should just go ahead and kill all our albinos too??
Maybe we should just enjoy the hobby, get along, have fun,
realize people breed morphs because they are pretty and it gives us (humans) satisfaction? Wait.....that can't be right either??
Bryan
MeanPeopleSuck
Albinos will go blind when exposed to too much sunlight.
Really? Is this proven, or is this something you THINK might happen?
Do your research. Yes, it seems to be a proven fact in many types of albino animals even humans. I personally have "proven" it with albino red eared sliders, who are sun-loving reptiles. So with turtles, I dont "THINK" it. I know it.
But most people do not let their albino ball pythons in direct sun light or even bright light that much. So who knows?
I am far from an expert, and my previous post was only sarcastic humor.
My point is, maybe if everybody will stop being an ass on here and get along..we could share information and learn more about the animals that we all apparently love? Why else are we coming to the "ball python" forum?
Cant we all just get along?
Rodney King (I think that was him that said that??) lol
Just asking a question, no harm intended...
My point is, maybe if everybody will stop being an ass on here and get along..we could share information and learn more about the animals that we all apparently love?
And I think the REVERSE is also true. People are INSANELY quick to jump the gun and be ultra defensive and snotty BEFORE anything is even said. Two wrongs don't make a right, even in the fantasy land of Ball Pythons.....

I think that since the BP forum is notorious for it's "flamers" people just come on in and get pissed at us...
About the snake, I think that if it's fully capable of taking it's prey and shedding, I see no problem with it. If it does have defects, I really don't see why you'd want to cross that with another morph, or breed it at all.
Just my $.02
Ryan
I think that is damn cool! If it proves out it can add something to every morph out there. How is he/she eating?
Tony Hurt
Personally I think as long as the health of the snakes is not effected then its ok. I think that breeding this would be a step too far. patterns an colors are ok but this is seriosly borderline.........lets see how the thing sheds.........
Can I add one?
I think that the beaded/scaleless pattern is pretty cool-a-rooni.
However, the lack of heat pits is not a good thing. These animals rely on their heat sensing abilities in many ways -- hunting, thermoregulating, incubating, etc.
Maybe the beaded/scaleless pattern genetics can be isolated. That would be nifty.
Until then...
Chris

I think this little guy/girl is cute. While I know nothing about breeding, I can't believe that some of you think that it should be killed just because it is different. I can understand not breeding it but killing it?????? WOW!
It looks like photoshop fun, well, thats what I thought when first looking at the pic. If it eats, craps, and sheds fine, breed it. If you do decide to breed it Rick, I will be the first to buy one of the babies. Good Luck with the ball and try to ignore the negativity on this forum
It is not mine......I wish it was.
It eats rat pups, shed, and defecates......
Hell I wish some of my other morphs did same!
