Taming...

bornshallow May 25, 2005 02:44 PM

Im intersted in buying an Aru GTP, because ive heard that most the time, they are the most gentle.

1. How do i tame my python to be gentle as a pup?

2. Ive heard somewhere that you shouldnt even hold a GTP unless its about a year old, is this true? Why?

Thanks for your help

Drew

Yes Arus are usually the most laid back, but there is no way to tell and any locale can go either way with temperment. It is best not to hold them until they are around a year in age. Usually by this time, they "should" be feeding on large fuzzies up to small mice......the bigger the better. Also, by the time they hit this age, you can usually tell what their attitude will be like just by their interaction with you. I've been lucky with the animals I've produced over the last few years being very calm at 1 year old.......having never been handled. I also have some adult imports that are tame as a puppy and they were brought in as adults. Get a well established animal from a "BREEDER" that knows the demenor of the snake and you can't go wrong. As I always tell people, any snake can bite at any time. If you are that worried about getting bit, then maybe a snake isn't the best "pet". Good luck.

the reason it is suggested to not hold babies until they are at least a year old is because they are very fragile. If you've ever seen a new hatchling chondro, you would understand why. Their spine, and tail especially, can be irreversibly damaged and this may not be noticed for a couple of years. They should be treated like a wet tissue.......they are delicate.

I think Brandon covered mostly everything. I got a FH wamena and he is as tame as a ball python. Once you get into chondros, tamness probably wont even matter to you. In the beginning I wanted a tame Aru and I believe it was Max who told me that Rico had some nice Biaks, I told him Biaks are evil and I dont want one and he told me everyone who has said that to him has ended up getting a biak. Ever since I have been saving up for a big, mean, nasty Biak. haha.
