Advice About Snails for Food

colorfulcritters May 25, 2005 09:28 PM

I'm wondering. I've been able to find freshwater snails. They're small, but edible to humans. I'm in Japan, so they eat them here.

Well anyway, I'd heard that snails have the next best nutrients, or vitamins for turtles, to crickets. Is this true?

I'm wondering what snails contain that are so good for turtles if it is. I've boiled them, of course, and not all the turtles will eat them. But a couple do.

I'm feedimg them these because I can't find TetraReptomin in Japan.

I did a search for the nutritional value of snails and was not able to find much. However what I did find stated that snails don't have much nutritional value but that the shells can be a good calcium source. One big caution is that wild caught snails tend to be parasite carriers so it's not a good idea to use them.

I've been boiling them. This okay to kill parasites?

I could've sworn I'd read somewhere that snails are high up there in something, even as high up there as crickets are. Problem is, I'm lacking in crickets right now, and probably will be for quite a while.

What do you think of feeding turtles those cicadas, or annual locusts, the dogdays one?

I've heard the same thing about the calcium but couldn't find anything. As to the ciccadas, I know that when we had them here last year people were feeding them to their turtles.

Have you considered ordering Reptomin online? I was just checking at www.thatpetplace.com and they ship worldwide. You would just need to write them for shipping rates. You will find the information in "Shipping Policies" under "Customer Service".

This is great PH. I've checked it out, or emailed them. I just wonder though, does this websit also contain a forum of sorts and do you have to register to buy products?

PHLaure May 28, 2005 09:32 PM

No, you don't have to register and they are reliable. I've bought from them on several occasions. I'm not sure if they have a forum or not as I've never looked.
