Best cage for a mountain horned lizard?

Tugi May 26, 2005 12:35 AM

I work at a pet store that is going out of business, and I inherited all the left over reptiles, including a mhd. Would a reptarium be a good choice for housing? What size of tank is good? Do they need any supplemental heating? What do you usually feed yours?

I will be taking it to the vet when I can to get it tested for parasites, but once she has a clean bill of health, can i keep her with a water dragon?

I do keep mine in reptariums. I am using the 175 which is 4' tall and 29" sq at the base. I have step-by-step pictures and instructions on my site showing how I set them up. The dragons seem to be lovinging them. You can take a look at http://www.froggieb.com/MHDFAQ.html#reptarium

Do they need any supplemental heating?

Usually household temps are fine for MHDs. The preferred high temp is 78 and the low can drop to anywhere from 60-70 at night depending on the season. You can find a lot more information on my web site at www.froggieb.com/MHDCaresheet.htmlIf you want a more bare-bones format for initial reading go to http://www.froggieb.com/MHDshortcare.html.

What do you usually feed yours?

The main diet for mine are nightcrawlers supplimented with roaches, silkworms, or whatever other insect I may have. They love the early spring grubs out of a chemical free lawn and from what I have seen crickets are the least favorite food.

A lot of people on some of the WC forums think they are a good mix. I worry about the differences in temps and animal size. In general I don't like the idea of mixing species unless you have a very large, like walk-in sized, vivarium.

Good luck with your new animals. Be sure to post or email if you have any other questions.

WELCOME!!

Thanks very much for the info!

I will try and go get two reptariums today, one for the MHD and one for my new iguana. I'm hoping to adopt out the MHD and whatever lizards I can. Would you by any chance know anyone looking for a MHD in the San Francisco Bay Area?

I always know people looking for MHDs just not sure right off where most of them are. I will check with my waiting list and see if anyone is in your area that might be interested.
