help, millions of grey bugs!!!!!

tamlin May 26, 2005 01:21 AM

just recently i have noticed alot of little grey bugs invading my lizard tanks as well as my house. they dont seem to be mites or ticks, they mainly congregate around waste and moisture, not on the lizards (well sometimes, but not often). they are long and skinny, really tiny, 6 legs, they look like they have wings but they only hop, they have fly and beetle characteristics. does anyone know what they are? i just cleaned the tanks today and they are already back in full force. i need to visit a vet, but if you guys know anything thatd be helpful as well!!!

It sounds like your grey bug epidemic is a little critter called spring-tailed fleas (or sometimes just called spring-tails). They are not actually fleas though. But they do hop like them...hence the name. They congregate around moist areas in the house like the bath tub, sink, windows, doorways etc., during the warmer months of the year.
They are not parasitic. They aren't after your herps, just their water bowls.
I am a licensed pest control technician, and what you have described fits every description of spring-tails.
