Basking Ramp Idea

crusher39 May 26, 2005 01:13 PM

I came up with a pretty good basking ramp idea this week. Seems to be keeping Turbo happy. Very inexpensive and easy.

Used:
5-6" plastic tent pegs (with the T-shaped base)
1-11" X 18" piece of plexiglass
Silicon aquarium sealant
Polished river rock

First I cut of the round end that you pound with the hammer and the tapered ends of the tent stake to make a T-bracket. Siliconed those at the height needed on both front and back and one end of the tank to support the plexiglass. Used a candle to heat the plexi to bend a 90 degree angle up for 1/2 in. Then heated again to bend the plexi down for the ramp. Then just sit the plexi on the siliconed tent stakes The 1/2 in. ledge makes it easier to put the river stone on the basking area and keeps them from falling into the water. The stones seem to hold some of the heat and keep the plexi from flipping as Turbo climbes the ramp. If you score the ramp with a razor, it makes it easier for the turtle to get a grip to climb the ramp. Turbo loves it. Hope it helps. Works great for me. Don't know how to attach a pic. If you need one let me know how.

Oh, make sure the silicone dries for 24 hrs. to avoid irritation to the turtle.
