I was wondering if anyone had tried live plants With their collareds? What type of plants, how well they Survived, if the collards tried to eat them, stuff like that. Ive pretty much finished my cage now, just need to re attach the glass doors, and get a higher wattage heat light, then ill take some picture so you can all laugh at my carpentry skills.

Some interesting facts ive learned:

Crayola paint:
Crayola Brown dries Pink
Black is just dark Green
rest are the correct colors

to make brown
1 part black, 2 parts yellow, 4 parts red
(or skip the yellow and make it 4 parts orange, 2 parts red)

Grout Refuses to Dry when its colored first, but instantly adheres to the little spaces in between your fingerprints

Adding sand to grout when youve mixed it with too much water works VERY well..

There is no such thing as washable paint (ive got blue fingers to prove this point)

When you water down grout enough, it works like regular paint

After your finished completely, your lizard wont Notice her cage is changed at all.
ah well, at least making it was fun :D

-Joe

P.S. Pic is of my Male and Female when I first got them about a year ago, I severly miss my male, and hopefully will replace him with a lizard that looks half as good.

I had typed a big long explanation and novel-esq message in reply about heatrocks, but i accidentally hit my backspace key, and it set me back to nothing. So, ill just give your a summary.

I've used heatrocks (and heatrock caves) for about 5 years, never once had one develop a hotspot, though they do occur, I check them at least twice a month for hotspots, they are on a dimmer switch, and also on a timer.
I consider them no more dangerous then my basking bulbs, since I've been using basking bulbs (pretty much since I bought collareds last year), ive had 3 explode, thats right, explode (well not in the sending shards of glass everywhere explode, but they Pop and the glass seperates from the metal screw in part, which causes the hot glass to fall onto whatevers below it), Each time ive checked the dome, ceramic fixture, power cable, and anything it was plugged into (timer, dimmer) all of which had nothing wrong with them. Btw if you Zoomed bulb does what mine did, call them and they will mail you a replacement and a letter of apology.

Now, imagine if I had posted my original message, which wsa about 3 times as long as this one (sorry about the length, I just cant stand people avoiding heatrocks all the time because of a rare occurence, its like not eating because you could choke)

Hot rocks are more of a problem for animals that need higher humidity. The humidity screws them up & then they get the hot spots. I had a boa that got a really bad burn from a hot rock. But collareds don't need high humidity so it's not so much of a problem.

I've had buld burns, and I choke on food :P

I do use a large hotrock in one tank., and I have seriouly had two lizards get a minor burn on their backs from too hot of a basking spot.

i was just saying-do what you like with your animals,it was meant to be a bit of friendly advise that's all.I've never had any reps get burned under basking lights(been keeping reps 5 yrs now)but the one hotrock i had burned ME!So chill out tiger and don't fret about it.Anyway that's a pretty collared you have there

lol, i wish it were that simple, out of 3 hardware stores i called (home depot included) 1 was out, 1 did not carry grout at all, and the last only had whit premixed grout, i had fun making a big mess anyway

skyliner Jul 13, 2003 11:14 AM

looking walls, think its pretty cool , as far as plants I have used aloe plants, look neat, deserty. Like the heat and light. Only thing that messes them up are the collareds jumping on them, but hey they like that, and I have also used Hawortha, a succulant sounds weird but easy to find, anyway , again nice job ! Eve
