Has anyone ever tried Vacuum sealers for rats?

piebaldpython Jul 12, 2003 08:31 PM

Hi All,

Has anyone ever tried a vacuum sealer to 86 small/medium rats? If I put one in a jar with holes in the lid, but it in the bag, activate the machine and remove the air. Would it be quick and painless? I wouldn't suck the air out to the point where the eye balls pop out or anything but just enough to kill it. If you remove the air the animal should pass out very quickly and painlessly. I really don't want to wack them or dislocate. CO2 is an option but in the interm, I have the sealer. Would it would. Thanks for the input.

I think you would find it darn near impossible to kill them without sucking out their eyes and lungs. And they would be alive when you do it. Heck, I kill mine (cervical dislocation) freeze them in a box and only vac seal them up once they are frozen solid. Even on a dead corpse you end up with a bloody mess without freezing first.
So, the answer is NO
Get yourself some dry ice or learn to break their neck.

How exactly does one use Dry ice to kill Rats?

is the same as using c02..

simply place the chunk of dry ice into a tall bucket, place a towel over the ice, and put the lid on for 10 min or so..

drop the animals in.. instant c02 chamber!..

best of luck

drop the mouse in the container.. and vacume seal the air out.. it was horrible..

eyes popped out.. blood everywhere.. it was in hardcore pain.. and it took quite along time to actually die..

cervical disloaction, "whack" method, or C02 are all options when you have large numbers of animals to get rid of..

however once you kill em.. vacume seal them all off, and they last years!

best of luck

Thanks,

Seems like a real bad idea. I serched the archived posts and didn't find one that descibed it that way!! If I want to breed rats then I better just go out and buy the CO2.

On the bright side, I decided last night that if I need the regulator (to produce low pressure flow, like a beer tap) and a cylinder, hoses, etc. Then I'm just going to invest the additional $14.99 for a splitter for the CO2 line and hook up a kep in series. Save money on beer, easy killing of rats and gerbils. Sounds like a win, win situation for $185.00 USD. Thanks for the help. (I thank you but would amagine my liver will not)

Could someone describe the cervicle dislocation method in more detail. I've tried the old hammer to the skull routine but worry that this may have caused digestion problems in my BCI baby. Anyone aware of specific downside to whacking as it affects the snake and not my own conciousness?
