Can a RES live outside in NY

Turtlemh May 26, 2005 09:54 PM

I was wondering because the other day I was walking and I saw a Red Ear in a pond. Now I know it was a RES cause I got really close to it and I also have 2. Just wondering if they could live over are long winters? Seems quite odd to me. However I did see many RES in central park before when I went there on vacation living outside so who knows....

they will hibernate in the winter if its cold.

I know that, the reason why I am asking is because they are not a native animal to NY. Wondering if they could survive though these Buffalo winters.

Yeah, they survive just fine. That is why they are such a big pest up here in the north, because people release their old pets and the RES eat the native plants and take over the ponds running native species out. Many countries have banned them as pets for this reason.

Sure they can survive no problem. As long as they have some mud at at the bottom of pond (that won't freeze solid) to dig into and hibernate in they can certainly withstand a severe Winter.
