SamoID May 27, 2005 06:40 AM

today when i got home from work it was the 1st thing to give Amon some salad!
and when i looked closely i've noticed really small critures crawling in food bowl!
they are small as a dot and have very bright brown colour...do you think they're mites?
i've also noticed one on Amon yesterday but it was a bit bigger and had darker colour...
if it is the mites infection, what should i do?

The best bet is to get a product from your vet for the mite treatment. In the meantime, you can soak Amon in warm water to drown some of the mites. You have to completely tear apart his cage and if it has anything wooden, it would be best to throw it out. The whole cage must be washed out with hot water and soap and rinsed well. I am hoping your cage is not wood...The vet will give you something to put on Amon and possibly used in the cage. Good luck!

Do you feed crickets and keep a water dish or other moist area in this enclosure?

I ask because there may be other possibilities (like cricket reproduction) other than mites.

Do you have a loop or other means to inspect the folds and creases on your uromastyx?

If you haven’t done this- you might want to try holding your uromastyx over a white piece of paper and run your hand (or soft object of your choosing) over its body to see if any critters fall off on to the paper. Try to focus on the nape and sides of the neck, between and under the tail whorls, and where the legs join the body.

that was the first thing i did...actually i took him out to give him a bath and then i saw one mite on his body...i killed it at sight and than soaked Amon into warm water...after bath i checked him all over the body i didn't botice any more of the bugs...but next day i've noticed lots of those little little bugs in his food bowl...
no, i don't feed him with crickets, only bread worm occasionally and there is no waterbowl inside his tank as well!
tomorrow i'll get new sand and empty whole tank, sterilize it and put in new sand!
that shoul do...and of course i'll check Amon daily if i see any more of those little beings!
i hope this will help me get ride of them...
oh...how do mites affect uro?...behaviour, apetite, activities...?

I demited a small group recently. To be "thorough" as I don't like ot play a lot of games with the animals or waste my own time, I gutted the cage and had them on paper for a week. On recommendation, all the rocks and wood got a high heat washing through my dishwasher and then baked in the oven at about 350 for an hour. The animals were thoroughly sprayed with the Zoo-Med anti-mite stuff every three days and I also sprayed and cleaned the cage with something like "Healthy Habitat" that I got from LLL in addition to purging the paper substrate. Haven't seen a recurrence since then, so all appears fine.

I don't know what treatment Debb has to recommend, but I like to handle things just once.
