It must be a Dumerils Boa Baby kind of day...

Biophiliacs May 27, 2005 12:19 PM

Keko shed 10 days ago so I can't say I'm completely surprised... but she's fooled me many seasons before. 7 very nice babies from her bred to my oldest male. Their were also 2 stills, 2 premys, and 2 slugs. Not a bad litter for a female that is nearing a decade in age. I'll get some better shots once I've calmed down.

I usually wouldn't post something like this but I think its worth noticing how much pigment developement goes on in the later stages of pregency. Underdeveloped boas often have much less black pigment. I had one like this in a litter a few years back and at first I thought I'd hit the boa jackpot, but later realized that it was just premature.

Do you have a date on Ovulation and when the pair first mated as
my female ovulated in early feb with P.O.S on Feb 27th and is looking very close to giving birth but its difficult to predict an appropriate time.
Very nice babies too.

I have never witnessed the same type of ovulation swelling that goes on with SA boas as with my Dumerils. By that, I mean that the swelling was spread out more on the Dumerils. Much like the pre-ovulation swelling that is seen in the SA boas. I checked my records with her and they were breeding from Nov-Jan. At that time the male had lost all interest in breeding. She did NOT POS, but did have an intermediate shed 2 months into pregnancy. I had assumed she reabsorbed as she has in the past. If I counted days from when I did see a slight swelling, gestation is around 5 months. IME female Dumerils always shed 7-10 days prior to birth of offspring.

I have another female that I consider a more reliable breeder and she is gravid as well. Her ovulation swelling was much more pronounced than the female that just gave birth so I knew she was a lock. Again, no POS. But she went into the HCP following her ovulation towards the middle/end of Jan. She has been opaque starting early last week and should shed shortly. Should have babies around June 10th. I know the accepted gestation for Dumerils is 6 months, but of the 4 Dumerils pregnancys I've carried out over the last 5 years- the length was less than 5 months from the time of ovulation.

Congratulations! I'll be buying my first, in a couple of weeks. Have to feed my addiction, you know. Can't have too many snakes...or lizards for that matter. I'm glad to see people posting in this sight. These are beautiful animals.

I think that puts you ahead in the count but I think there will be other years for us to battle but I still might have some presents when I get back ......aside from rufus that is..

Paul seems to be one of the leading authorities on dumeril boa breeding. Good call Paul on the 10 day shed.
