Potting soil

JoshV May 27, 2005 06:33 PM

I am going to buy plants tomorrow, and I was wondering when I change the soil can I put regular potting soil in it (with those white things?) Because I wasn't sure if those white things in potting soil are poisonous or not. Thanks. If I shouldn't use that soil could you recommend another.

avoid any soil with perlite (the little white things). They are "puffed" lava (saimply put) and chams often shoot at light objects in the soil - you do not want him ingesting it. If you cannot find other soil, you can cover it with window screen or, my favorite, Plastic Canvas (see below). It is used in crafts and be found at any store, does not rust, cannot hurt your cham, cheap, and can be cut to any shape or size.

As for other soils, try to avoid soils in general that have fertilizers added. I know this can be difficult to find, but you might have better luck at a nursery rather than garden center.

Would you recommend packing peat moss in over the soil?

I sometimes put coco-fiber (similar to peat in consistency) on top but I still cover it with the PC as I showed in last post (hold it in place with bent paper clips). What you want to avoid is putting something on top that will keep TOO much moisture in b/c then you can have a problem with fungus gnats - harmless, but annoying! ;-/

If you use the peat, make sure it is moist before ahnd as it is very difficult to deal with when dry (ditton for coco-fiber). If you can just stay away from the perlite you really don;te have to worry. Oh, you can also put large river stines on the soil, but again, make sure there is enough air getting to soil to avoid the gnat problem.

I actually had some multi mix garden soil in my garage which consists of peat loam, compsted manure, and black earth and is 100% organic. So I'm thinking it should be fine.

thanks anyways though.

that is ideal - and sometimes difficult to find in this day of fertilizers and chemicals! ;-/

your plants should do well and if your cham happens to ingest a little it will do him no harm
