Why do we all keep snakes?

RuHigh May 27, 2005 06:40 PM

I started to keep snakes years ago, and to this day it's just for fun. I started with a burm(I know bad choice) and have had a few others along the way. I keep them cause I love them, yea when I do breed the burms I sell the babies, but it's not like I make a living that way. I just love the snakes.

I have ment some people along the way good and bad, BUT I have never seen so many people, who share a hobby, treat others sooooooooo bad as I have here!!!!

Between the Derma ball, the market falling, and all the BS how do any of you enjoy your snakes?

So I want to know, why do you keep snakes?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, or say anything bad about anyone, I just want to know.

Have a good day!

Yep,i'm in that 98 percentile.

Me?
For years i've kept terrariums and vivariums with many different species of herps.Which seems to have been like a "gateway drug"(for lack of a better term, lol)into breeding attemps for me.At the time of my first ever snake purchase(a Bp of course)i was trying to build a rain chamber for Red eye tree frogs, and had not even considered breeding a snake yet...
The irony to that is.Those red eyes were the only species i've kept that i could not grasp proper husbandry over....yep,they up and died on me..Lighting levels(not temps),i think.Still not sure...So i have not tried with them again.Maybe after a few more years of READING.lol

So began my study of Royals.

You know, this is the first question in a very long time that I actually want to answer.
Like most people I love animals. All animals. I've had it all. From Tigers to Mountain Loins, Monkeys to Sloths. 100 Aquairums of fish to every kind of herp there is...
But for me, snakes have always been my favorite creature. I can't see myself not having them. There were times in my life, that I couldn't have any. Like when I was stationed overseas in the Military doing special ops. Or inbetween jobs and living arrangements.
But now that I have a stable living arrangements, and a good job, I have had snakes. Just because they are part of who I am.
I live in a very non-herp related state (Indiana) there are not very many herpers here, but I find talking and chatting with others that have the same interest so rewarding.
It's like guys that are into NASCAR or SPORTS or whatever, we find a common ground, and friendships are begun and grown.
But like anything else in our lives, everything has a dark side.
Emotions come into play, I won't go into details cause we all know what I'm talking about. Greed, anger, jelousy, etc.
Me, I try to be helpful, friendly and above all, humorous with fellow herpers. It's hard at times, but I try.
I'll never be without animals, I don't think I would want to live in a world that would forbid me to do so.
I hope this answers your question, and if not.. sorry I rambled on so.......

Because an elephant won't fit in a 36qt. sterilite.

CJBianco May 27, 2005 08:38 PM

maybe you could find one without it's ears I'm sure it would fit then and it would be a highly sought after morph! LMAO.

And just because there is BS on the forums, we now can't "enjoy our snakes"? Huh?

Some people like having a pet snake to WOW their idiot friends with. Some people like having a pet snake because they are easy to care for and are hypo-allergenic. Some people get them because they are a fad. Some people get them with the sole purpose to make money.

If the treatment of the snake is the same, for arguement's sake, and all other things are equal, what makes any of those reasons BETTER than the others? Hmmmm......

I myself have Ball Pythons purely as an investment. I've been breeding them for fun since 1992, but now its just for an investment. For fun, I work with another 9 DIFFERENT snake species. That's where I get my true snake fix from. Funny thing though, take a look at the care of my BP's, which are there purely as an investment that I bought with "snake money" and take a look at 99% of the WC Ball Pythons in aquariums on kid's dressers in N. America, and tell me which gets the better care.

Who CARES WHY you have snakes? If they are properly cared for, that's all that matters.

caw8959 May 27, 2005 09:00 PM

Well maybe some people don't care about why people have snakes. But the question was asked and I think it is a good one. It is interesting to read all the answers. Personally I wouldn't want to buy a snake or any other animal from someone that was in it just for the money. But then that is just the way I feel and doesn't really mean dittly squat.

I have two ball pythons. I bought the first one for my son. Actually I made him pay for it. He was 11 yrs old and only got an allowance of $2.00 a week. It took a while but he paid for him. A year later I bought one for myself. Now we don't debate over who is gonna get to hold the snake.

We love the snakes and they are just our pets. No plans on breeding. We didn't get them to be cool. Although his friends think him mom is kind of cool for letting him have them. No plans on getting any more. Thanks for the question. Not all of us are breeders. Some of us just love having a snake or two or......more

Keeps your MIL from dropping by? Mine lives 12 hrs away was here for x-mas when I got 6 new babies from hubby as a present and when one escaped while hubby and I had went out the MIL caught it and put it back!! LOL, mine doesn't mind them. She wasn't impressed though when she found out the escapee was the one that had bitten me!!

Why I keep them, I love them. Snakes are fascinating creatures, beautiful, and I can sit and stare at them for hours even if they are just curled up and sleeping!! I will breed them so I can get more and other kinds of herps I want. Maybe eventually they will pay for themselves but hey that is a bonus That is why I got some hets and a pastel. LOL, so I can hopefully afford some GTP's and Green and Blue tree monitors next year.
