Plastic Rack Question?

kylescott May 28, 2005 12:16 AM

What is the plastic called that is made for these racks. I want to check at a few plastic shops and need to know what to ask for. Thanks in advance for your help.

Kyle,

There are several.

High Impact Polystyrene

Acrylic

Expanded PVC

High Density Polypropylene

High Density Polyethylene

Hollow Core PVC (or whatever Habitat Systems uses)

There are probably some I'm forgetting.

Which is the most commonly used? I think High Impact Polystyrene is what I am looking for. Which one is it that, if it were to catch on fire the fumes would put it out.

Expanded PVC. Common brands are Sintra, Komotex, Celtec, and Versacel.

If you are wanting to make a rack out of plastic the easiest to use is 1/2" HDPE You are looking at around 100-120 per sheet but it can be routered and put together like wood with screws and call it a day. It is also a bit more ridged then the 1/4" material so the sturdy strength will make up for the extra expense.
