Caulker Cay Boas

atomicjade May 28, 2005 12:23 AM

Does anybody else have any of these boas? I bought one because a typical common boa gets too large for my convenience, and she is an absolute doll. I know they have been known for being nippy as babies but mine has been nothing but a sweetheart, she's very docile (but not dead) and personable, and she has converted a fair amount of people who use to be terrified of snakes! I was just wondering what other peoples experiences/thoughts were on them? Feel free to (and please do!) post pictures, here's one of mine.

I have kept Caulker Cays for nearly two years now. I now own three but have kept five. They do tend to be very snappy and they hiss as loud as a large burm. I do not recommend them for beginning boa keepers. They also have a hard time with frozen thawed in my experience, usually too busy hissing at you to eat.
That being said, they are probably my favorite boas. They lose the attitude after about a year and become very docile. They are incredibly different from Colombians. My largest female is around two years old now and 22 inches long. I have another female that is the same age at 18 inches. My island boas are the coolest part of my collection, I would give up all of my morphs before they would go anywhere.
I am putting in a very bad picture of my first female.

That was a very good picture of my second Caulker Cay. Here is my first one.

They certainly are different from typical boas, I guess I lucked out with mine from what it sounds like from your experiences (she is my first boa, although I highly doubt the last). How big are they when they are born? I thought mine was relatively young, being around 20"-24".

I own two. Have owned the female for two years now, and the male for one. Unlike the other replier's experience, both of mine have been calm and easy to handle for the most part. The only time I have had them get snippy with me is when they think I have food. The babies are usually a little nippy, but calm down quickly with regular handling and patience.
