Well I thought I would share this year's progress so far.
I didn't breed as many of the snakes I wanted to breed, but I still have 5 gravid cal kings. (or did).
Clutch #1 was laid on the 23rd... Only she's still working on the clutch... Bred my high white cal king male to one of my aberrant banded/striped kings. (Hubby actually bred them, it wasn't a pairing I had planned on)... after laying three nice eggs, she appeared to be egg bound. I put a large water dish in with her to help encourage her to pass the eggs (regardless of the eggs, my concern was for her). Apparantly that was encouragement enough, she laid a slug (nearly 3 inches long!), and then last night she laid another slug and when I checked on her this morning she had a prolapsed oviduct, with three eggs still inside. I put her on sugar-water soaked paper towels, which I had heard would work to get her to pull the oviduct back inside, and apparantly it was good advice, as she was completely back to "normal" after an hour. Several hours later she layed another enormous slug, and her oviduct remained inside as it is supposed to. Two more eggs to go, we'll see how that goes.
I have four other cal kings that have shed and are due to lay at any time.
First up is Licorice who is a banded desert phase. She's crossed to my desert phase aberrant banded male. Last year she laid 15 eggs that all died due to an AC failure, and she double clutched but escaped before laying and returned after laying.
Next anticipated clutch is Pegasus, an aberrant banded/striped albino cal king, who will prove out my high white cal king as to whether or not he's het albino. She should lay her clutch this weekend. This will be her first clutch.
Just shed in the last three days are my other two cal kings.
Queenie will be laying soon, this will be her third clutch. Her first clutch was 8 eggs, and her second clutch was 12 eggs, two died in the shell and rotted, one died full term, the rest hatched out perfect. She's crossed to my aberrant banded male.
Euphrates, sister to the one with the large clutch of duds and prolapsed uterus, is also up next... she's large like she's gravid, but I couldn't feel any eggs in her, so either I couldn't feel the eggs, (and they are there) or she's ovulating. After the weekend I might introduce her back to one of my males ... if they breed, I'll know not to expect eggs any time soon!
Oh and anyone who reads this who thinks that their Appalachicola king is turning ugly (especially a male one) can give it to me. I have two beautiful girls that have no male, and it's a bummer not to breed them! Next year, maybe.
