I was reading some posts on another forum and heard someone use the term "test for hets" How would you do that? breed to a normal and see what u get?
You would breed to an animal that showed the trait you suspected it might be het for. For example: I have a snake that "might" be het for albino (66% chance). If I breed him to my albino and get even a single albino out of the offspring, then he IS het. If I get NO albino offspring, he probably is not. The more offspring I get that are NOT albino (assuming that NONE are) the surer I am that he is not het for albino.
Both of my breeding pairs could be considered testing for hets. I bred a snake that I am pretty sure is a Charcoal to a Snow. Since anery A, and B are not compatable I am hoping for all normal babies proving she is indeed a Charcoal. MY other is a Normal het Anery to an Amel. Depending on the offspring I should be a lot closer to finding what if any hets the Amel is hiding. I could be looking at a whole bunch of Normals. But until you do some "test" you really never know what is going to pop out.
