Old Fire Belly Not Eating

Keri May 28, 2005 07:38 AM

Hello Everyone, it's been a while since I last posted. I have had a fire belly newt for 7 years now. He's always been a relatively good eater. He's setup alone in a 10 gallon aquarium with plenty of plants, hiding places, land area, filtration, and so on. In the last 3 weeks he just stopped eating. I've tried all of his favorites. He used to see me coming and swim to the front of the tank and eat out of my hand. Now, when the food gets near him, he doesn't even seem to recognize it, often getting scared and swimming away. Is there anything I can do, or is he just tooooo old? He was already an adult when I got him, so I don't even know how old he really is. Has anyone ever heard of a newt going blind? It's almost like he doesn't even see right anymore. Please give me any ideas/suggestions/thoughts.

Keri

He could very well just be too old. It happens. Newts can have a lifespan of up to 20 years. But you don't know how old he was when you got him.

Just keep trying. He may be in a slump and will snap out of it. Good luck
