It's the crushed walnut shells. I know some people don't like it, but he seems to be doing fine on it. I got him when he was about 4 months old, and didn't want to chance putting a juvi on sand. In a few months when I completely change the substrate, I will switch over to sand however!

Hi
think you can better use sand then walnutshells.
i use heated350-400degree playsand and its cocodiose free .
they use it here for pignons on the floor.
i use it the same day as they hatch i never got a impaction from it.
i know calsisand is not so good r other painted/colord sands.
i have raised atleast 200 babie beardies and not one got impacted.
i put my cricks 30-40 seconds in frezer so they r easy to catch.
i put them then in a swalow bowl so they not eat sand so fast.
i also know some people not like san.
the typ of sand i use i already use for 5 years with good results.
