hes throwing a fit

mishy May 28, 2005 07:00 PM

iv been having a problem with ants in my house and for some reason only half of my basement has ant trails. so i can safely keep all my animals down here but only on one side. i got a bearded dragon and put him up off the ground on some shelves hoping ants wouldnt get up there but they did. they were not eating his food, just drinking from his water but within a couple days they were every where in his cage. so i cleand it up and moved it to the other side of the room. but the only place i could put his cage was on the floor. hes running back and forth like crazy, stoping to bob his head which iv never seen him do till now. why is he running around like crazy? i dont think he can really see any of the other animals. hes not doing it to me either. what did i do to the poor guy?

My beardie hates being on the floor. If her cage is not elevated she goes balistic. This and also the move, even though it was only to the other side of the room, could be causing him to act crazy. Try elevating his cage by getting some cinder blocks and plywood and making a stand. Also, you can try smearing vasoline around the bottom few inches of the outside of the cage to stop the ants from climbing in.

could he have been bitten? Many ants produce formic acid and can cause quite a sting/bite.

well hes calmed down quite a bit, every once in a while now he starts runing about and bobbing his head, but not almost constantly like he was. there are no more ants in his cage now so he wouldnt have been bitten. thanks for the help though.

that's good! Hope he settles down for you soon.

I had heard about the vaseline on the legs of cage remedy, too. I have a cham and many keepers who keep their chams outdoors use this method. I use it at the base of a hummingbird feeder pole and it works great - messy, but works
