Hypo sibling question for the Hypo breeders

morgans boas May 28, 2005 10:13 PM

Hi, I've noticed from time to time in the classified section that some of the headings will say something like --( nice Columbian, Hypo sibs) -- So my question is: do you (the hypo breeders) feel that the normals looks are affected by the Hypo morph, or is this a pitch to sell for a little more. Please be honest. I'm just curious and wanted to know. I've seen similar post with Jungle sibs, and Sunglow sibs. So I guess anyone willing can comment their thoughts on this -- please do.

Thanks ,David

I have noticed that some of the non-hypo siblings in a hypo breeding can express a very different color than a typical "normal". We have collected a few boas that express these traits and hope to breed them in a couple years.

So you don't like to know what the parents, brothers and sisters are of the boa you may be purchasing? Let me ask you something, do you think it's bad for someone to post what the siblings are? Another question (for everyone)... if you saw a "normal" boa from a "normal" breeding produced by a reputable breeder for sale and a "normal" boa from a jungle breeding (also from a reputable breeder) and both are for the same price, which would you purchase? You may get a low end jungle! I know this does not work with salmons but hey, I like to have as much information as possible about any snake I may purchase. What I don't like seeing are boas labeled "junglish pattern" or "arabesque-like" boas. Is this a junglish salmon? J/K!

Oh, I do like to know as much as I can about the litters and parents of the snakes that I'm purchasing. And I would also choose the Jungle sib over the non-Jungle sib (maybe I shouldn't of included that). What I'm referring to are the ads that hammer the fact that they were related to Hypos, or in a more recent ad that I saw, Sunglows. Some of the ads seem to be using it as a selling point. I was wondering since I've never compared Hypo sibs to normal sibs, if there was anything noticable. This was a genuine question, and not an intention to upset anyone. Your abberant Hypo is quite stunning BTW. Take care, David

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question. I don't believe normal offspring have anything special going on from salmon breedings. I have seen some nice normals as well as some not so nice. Wether normal or salmon, by selective breeding (clean or pastel parents), you have the potential to produce great looking normals.

Can anyone tell me what the hell a "pre-harlequin" is? Is this a boa that is not a harlequin yet? J/K

I believe that the adults that produced these "pre-harlequin" boas were purchased from one of the Magee brothers before they started calling them harlequins. However, Tim (Rainshadow) made a post the other day that the adults that produced these so called pre-harlequins did come from him, but were in no way related to the actual harlequin line.

Hypomelanism reduces black ... allowing for a more clear view of color ... in turn allowing for more effecient selective breeding towards color.

Its the same principle as with pastels. The only difference being pastels are a selective bred polygenic trait while hypos are a freak of nature single gene mutation.

Because of the increased effenciency of breeding for color in the (hypo) line, the normals could very well have nice color tied to them as well (just cant see it for the most part, at least in comparison to the hypos... its hiding under the melanin).

I still want to know what a pre-harlequin is?

He made a tongue in check comment that had some threads to it several days ago. Scroll down for an interesting read!
