Any good alligator/crocodile movies?

radwigs May 29, 2005 12:46 AM

This is a VERY light and unimportant topic but are there any good movies with crocodilians out there? I am not even talking necessarily accurate because we all know Hollywood doesn't do that with any animal films. I'm just wondering if there are any crocodilian or even reptilian movies out there that are entertaining without being embarassing to the reptile world. What has prompted this is the Sci Fi Channels movie marathon this weekend. Yesterday out of curiosity I watched Alligator II: the mutation. I know it was science fiction with much more emphasis on fiction than science but come on. There were scenes of the supposed giant gator swimming with no part of it's body moving. Any reccomendations or should I just avoid all Hollywood versions of anything reptilian? I am now going to go watch Dinocroc, which I recorded while I was out tonight. Guess I am an eternal optimist. Maybe this will at least be entertaining without making me cringe.

The Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) listst dozens of films with either "alligator" or "crocodile" in the title. Of course, some of these have nothing to do with the reptiles (Like Albino Alligator, both Alligator Alley movies etc.)

Among my favorites are:
Alligator (great screenplay by John Sayles)

Lake Placid (fun black comedy)

Eaten Alive (directed and produced by the folks who made Texas Cahinsaw Massacre)
AKA:
Death Trap (UK)
Horror Hotel
Horror Hotel Massacre
Legend of the Bayou
Murder on the Bayou
Starlight Slaughter

The Alligator People (classic 50s mad scientist/monster movie)

An Alligator Named Daisy (British screwball comedy from the 50s)

Do you have "An Alligator Named Daisy"? I have never seen it, but have a lot of lobby cards from it and have searched everywhere for a video without luck.
Another good one, and one that people wouldn't suspect, is "The Happiest Millionaire" with Fred McMurry playing an eccentric millionaire with a house full of pet alligators. It's a campy music and dance movie from 1968 or so and is a lot of fun to watch.

I'd forgotten about "The Happiest Millionaire" (I'm not much of a Disney fan).

I made a VHS copy of "Daisy" late one night. I think it was on AMC or TCM, but it might have been a local station. I'll look around and see if I can find it.
