pied or not?

jimfmcdonald May 29, 2005 03:26 AM

this one came from a egg that was half the size of all the rest and only made it to about day 37. the male is a 100% het pied and the female is a 50%het pied. so I am hoping this was going to be a pied though what a loss! please give your opinion. thanks.

Hey Jim,
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't beat myself up. The pattern that is visible makes me believe that it was normal in appearance. It is hard to tell from the picture, but I would think that the pattern that has developed so far would be alot crazier looking, like that of a pied.
Sorry for the loss,

Color & pattern are the last things to "set in" before the snake hatches...............unfortunaetly yours didnt hatch..............sucks..........

As for him possibly being a pied? Id have to say....sorry on that one............look at the ventral area......although the colro and pattern have not completly come in yet.........youcan still clearly see that the snwke has a normal balls pattern.......Pieds usually have a very odd pattern........as well as the typical "twin stripes" along the spine........

Yes he dosent have any color on the lower 3rd of the body.......but thats just because he died b4 the development could continue........

Sorry fot eh lossof the baby........that sucks.

It also looks a little constricted where the color stops. Maybe the yolk cord was wrapped around too tight or some other problem right there causing both the white tail and the death.

Are you saying that color and pattern begin at the head and works its way down as it develops? I can see what Jim does and what he is hoping for. It died but with that lower third being clear of pattern it could at least prove that his hets are hets. I can't say. I've got my years in but I'm no expert. When I have cut open colubrid eggs I have never seen where pattern started at the head and developed downward. The pattern was always equally developed over the entire body. What pattern is showing does not look like the pieds I've seen.

Im with John, I know the pattern looks normal at this point but there should be a pattern covering the hole snake, right? I only have 2 more eggs left from this clutch and if they both come out normal looking then this loss could help me to know if my female is a het or not, I will still try her again next year!

thanks.

sorry bout the last post....a bit confusing.........i no where said that they patter begins at the head towards the tail...........i did state that color and pattern are the last things to happen.............

as for the colorless and patternless area on the lower half.........dont know why that is............or why the area above the colorless/patternless area seems to be discolored as well..........like it is bruised...........stuff happens....

As for him being able to call his snakes hets..........in no way can he say that.........this snake is clearly not a pied........compare it to extremely low white pieds...........there is a tremendous difference.....if your not sure of where to look......might i suggest Pete Khal's website.....he has a couple on there for you to examine....

notice the bellies of ALL pieds..........and the pattern......
