Stacking in a big cage ?!?!

MatNga Jul 12, 2003 10:45 PM

I have never owned 3 week olds before only sub adults and adults. this wouldn;t happen with them.

i have just bought two 3 inch hatchling berdires and in a cage way bigger than they need (they are in a 20 gal) they are piled up on each other ?

tonight to sleep? should i provide anathor branch or smething? there is other stuff to climb on and sleep.

here is the cage

I'm guessing you know that your babies won't be able to stay with each other for much longer.
You'll find nipped tails, and already there's a dominate one. Thats the one that likes to lie on top when they're on a branch, etc.

Males can't be housed together. Chances are they'll killing each other ... or you'll have serious fights in the tank. Just don't do it.

And females often can't be housed together either. As mentioned before, there will always be a more dominate one that will eat better, sleep better, etc. Which will adventually cause extreme stress on one beardie or another.

I never recommend housing beardies together. It's just not worth the stress on the beardie.

Just My two cents!

oh no.
I would never do that..
Whether they're adults or juvie's. I wouldnt never personally put a male and female together unless my intention was to breed them. It's not a healthy practice to keep them together elsewise.

Again, your poor female.
Non stop breeding is anything but healthy for your female.
You're also shortening her lifespan conciderably.
Males don't know when to stop when it comes to breeding. They'll just go and go ...
Female beardies shouldn't breed more then three cluches per year (in my opinion), and even then, you can't do it for more then a few years.
...and not to mention the stress on the female ...

I would definitely seperate all beardies.
You should never keep males and females together just because it's more convenient.

Yikes.

Several basking branches and spots is always a good idea when you have multiple dragons in a cage. Sometimes the more dominant ones will take the best branches and spots and leave less dominant dragons to find somewhere else to bask.. and if they don't have anywhere.. that can lead to problems.

The other post was correct, dominant dragons can and will nip and bite each other.. especially if there is not enough food. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. If there is only one pair in the cage your chances are much less likely for them to nip, but there is always the chance one will.. doesn't even have to be dominant or aggressive.. could see the tail or toe as a food source and go after it.

However, i'm not sure exactly what you are talking about.. but if you are talking about the two dragons laying on top of each other.. this is most likely not a dominance issue.

Young dragons are very social and they will interact with each other and lay on each other all over the place. I keep groups together when they are young and have seen this time and time again.. one dragon will be laying down and another will lay on it, and another will lay on that one.. and so on and so on.

Here's a pic to illustrate my point. These were all fine and never nipped.. just liked to hangout and be together. Five minutes later the one on the bottom would be on top..they just like to perch on anything they can find. lol

I haven't kept three togetehr...but i have had two females housed together from babies. I take them out to feed, so there is no competition for food, and there are a lot of places to sleep, so it was fine. Beardies are not solitary animals and like to be in the companionship of other beardies or at least their owner. When I'm away they have each other, and are very happy together..good luck.
