after almost 3 years, and many geckos, ive never had a problem with sand. it worked great for me, i only stopped using it cos' i have to many geckos now to afford it. i like paper towels, and i wouldnt use repti bark. i also like repti carpet, its VERY easy to clean, just hose it off.

i use repti carpet for my snake. I really like it and wouldnt trade it for any substrate. Very easy to clean. I just hose it off then put in a bucket with a tiny amount of bleach then rinse A LOT to make sure all the bleach is off. It never smells or anything. it looks pretty good too.

I use paper towels. Cheap and easy to clean up, plus they are safe for all ages of leopard geckos.

Some people use newspaper, slate, and have tried like felt or some fabric that you can get in the fabric dept. in Walmart. If you choose this route just make sure little toes dont get caught on little fibers and the fabric/felt will have to be washed once a week to keep the yuckies away.

You can get it for pretty cheap. At home depot, or lowes it is $1 for a 12in. x 12in. piece. Just get them there to cut a few pieces that will fit into your enlcosure, and you will probably spend a couple of bucks, definantly no more than $10. Slate is the best, as there is no possibility for ingestion, it transfers heat well, it looks good, and its natural for the geckos.
