How many turtles.........

zookrewe May 29, 2005 03:37 PM

......can you fit in a 10 gallon aquarium? I was visiting Corpus Christi last week and while at the beach next to the USS Lexington, we stopped in one of the gift shops. I happened to see these turtles. I was appalled when I saw it and proceeded to photograph them, even after they told me not to take any photos in there. I know the 4" rule is a farce as far as enforcement goes. But what about who knows how many hatchlings in such a confined space? Feel free to visit or call and complain about it. I have attached 2 photos; 1 of the turtles, and one of the store's name. Here is the contact info if anyone is interested.

Oh my god.. That sickens me! Personally, I would not put more than 2 baby turtles in a 10 gallon!! Get those turtles help, and fast, if possible.. And if not, make it possible!!

It doesn't even look like they have any water, and no basking site, therefore they cannot eat (they cannot swallow without being under water) and cannot thermoregulate their body temperatures.

Here's the website for finding contact info for regional FDA offices.

http://www.fda.gov/ora/inspect_ref/iom/iomoradir.html

Here's the number for the Dallas office (a regional office) (214) 253-4904

Anyone can call in a consumer complaint, if they have the address of the store. If we do nothing, then nothing gets done.

I think most stores get away with this because either 1) no one knows the regulation or 2) no one bothers calling it in. The more people that call, the more likely something happens.

Contact the FDA as Katrina says. For anyone seeing this please do that in lieu of buying any of them (not saying that that is what the original poster planned on doing but just making a general statement). They will just restuff the tanks. A sad and bitter pill for all of us to swallow but we will help their cause more by complaining enough instead of saving one to condemn another to this treatment.

That just goes to show you how ignorant, cruel, and heartless people can be! Whoever runs that shop needs to be thrown into a small jail cell with about 200 other animal abusers and see just how he/she likes it! ~Christy~

The authorities always seem to look the other way with these blatantly illegal sales but come down hard on responsible keepers for minor violations of arbitrary ownership laws.
