adding a new turtle..?

mixitup May 29, 2005 06:46 PM

Has any ever put a new turtle in with one thats lived by itself? I have a medium sized RES and was hoping to get him a friend, so we put a new turtle in and he tried to bite it, so we took it out.
Is there any way to introduce another turtle to him? The tank is big enough for two turtles, but would a little bit bigger one help? Would getting a female vs. a male be better or worse?
Any info would help. Thanks.

Sometimes, a turtle that has lived alone 4 a looong time, would rather be alone than have company. I had one amboina box turt that will bite any other turt i put in with him. The only thing i could do is seperate him from the others. Another thing is, NEVER EVER put 2 males together(this rule does not only apply for RES, but also for most reptiles as well). And also quarantene the newcomer for at least a month so you can monitor for any illness or parasites.

I agree. Make sure the aquarium is large enough for both the turtles (10gallons of water for EACH inch of shell. Two 5inch turtles = 100gallons of water) and also make sure it will be big enough for them both when they are full grown (if you get two females the size tank you will need is going to be astronomical).

Also make sure that you quarentine the newcomer for at least one month in its own enclosure.

Sometimes animals really do not take to newcomers.

Good luck!
