BED A BEAST/ECO EARTH

NMTSPARKS Feb 07, 2003 04:41 PM

IS BED A BEAST AND ECO EARTH THE SAME. THE PACKAGES SAY THEY ARE THE SAME COMPRESSED COCONUT FIBERS. JUST MADE BY DIFFERENT COMPANIES. IM CURRENTLY USING ECO EARTH MADE BY ZOO MED. IT SAYS ITS PERFECT FOR FROGS. LAST NIGHT AS I WAS CLEANING OUT THERE TANK I GRABBED A HAND FULL OF THE ECO EARTH PICKING STUFF OUT OF IT. AFTERWARDS I NOTICED I HAD LITTLE SPLINTERS LIKE FIBER GLASS IN MY HANDS. IS THAT SAFE FOR A FROGS DELICATE SKIN? HAVE YOU GUYS EVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE?

no idea what you saw. but they are the same product. everyone calls it bed-a-beast because it was first. I can't imagine that stuff is a problem but that's your call. I mix the stuff with bark nuggets and compost (composted leaves are great). helps with the texture and looks more realistic too.

I use the eco-earth, it is the same as the coconut fibre marketed under other names. I never had a problem with it. I use it over a layer of bark chips (large ones, big enough so the frog cannot swallow one during feeding.) For my frogs who dig alot, like my pacmans and toads, I use a layer about 3-5 inches deep.
