dune gecko and leopard gecko

grnpanda May 30, 2005 02:31 PM

I recently acquired a dune gecko, right now he is being kept seperate from my other gecko.

If he makes it through his month in solitary confinement with no problems, I was wondering if it was safe/okay to put him in the same living quarters as my leo (which is in a standard 10 gallon tank with 2 inches of vitasand, a water dish, and two hide rocks-one on the warm side of the tank and one on the cooler side).

Are there modifications to the habitat that I need to make (i.e. deeeper substrate, hotter area) if I do keep them together? Or if I have to maintain them seperately, how should I set up the dune geckos home?

Hello-

Don't keep the Dune Gecko (Stenodactylus petrii) with the Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius.) It just doesn't work, leopard geckos are much too large and the possibility of it eating or hurting the dune gecko is very high. To set the dune gecko up separately, I would say that it is best to create a mixture of sand and peat (about fifty fifty) to use in a different aquarium as the substrate. The deeper you can make it, the better (at least four inches). Moisten it then compact it, so that your dune gecko can burrow, since they love to dig. They need to be kept hot as well, with an ambient temp of around 80 and a hot spot of around 95 or so.

Hope this helps,

yeah dont do it. if the dune gecko was larger or same size and came out in the day ok thats great but if u do put it in there u just r giving ur gecko a little expensive treat(since it cost more than everything u feed it)
