could this calligaster be a KY maybe?

As the prairie kings are so variable throughout their range! The prairies found here range from light coloration and bold patterned to dark overcast gunmetal grey to striped!!!

Here are some pics...

Here is one that is holding its colors and pattern very well..

And here are a pair that look different from each other and found under the same cover...
The one on the left is dark brown, almost no pattern visible...
The one on the right is the striped variant. Kind of hard to see from the angle, but it had two dorsal stripes running down its back. Kind of like a yellow rat does.

Here is a nice shot of a striped variant. See how the pattern is almost gone and the snake has stripes? And note the coloration!! The background is the gunmetal grey! Pretty cool how varible these guys are. Love to find them out in the field..
