Those may very well be the largest rat snake eggs ever! Good luck with them. Tom Stevens

Very cool...I just got five eggs from my G.oxcephala. I'm looking at revamping a larger part of my collection more toward European and Asain....Situla are definately on my list...to replace my corns...

red tail green eggs? Pretty rare to see cb. How much are you going to sell those for?

Conrad Jun 04, 2005 08:15 PM

Well truth is, I don't plan on parting with any on the first go-round. I'm just glad to have one clutch of viable eggs this year, and hopefully good turn out of hatchlings.

Good idea, keep them for future breeders! I saw some for sale recently too, if you are interested in some unrelated blood to add. How cold were they when they breed? Also, how long have you had them in captivity?

Conrad Jun 05, 2005 02:37 PM

I don't out-righ temperature cycle any of my Asain beauty or similar species, I keep them on a photocycle instead, which does create longer "night, or cool periods. But I just keep them with heat lamps, and use the natural day length as a measure of how long I leave the lamps on. I also tend to keep them in rooms with windows, to allow for natural amounts of light to reach them and induce the proper cycling.

Not to change the subject, but below is a picture of my male G. janseni that I've been looking for a girly for. Enjoy...

I was hoping that was a silver phase oxy that just gave you the eggs! Oh well, good luck with those janseni, I really like the black and white ones. As for the oxys, I read that someone witnessed copulation at 66F or something like that, so I was wondering if you also kept them cool to induce breeding.

chris_harper2 Jun 06, 2005 08:56 PM

Only time I ever witnessed copulation it was 63* F.

I cycle mine similar to Conrads, at least I did. I have not yet made adjustments to my current snake room to do so.

Yes, I recall it was you, my "go to" guy once I get some gonyosoma ssp. I was close, I knew it was in the 60s though. Got any black and tan janseni babies yet? I would like a pair! Post a pic of those would you, I love those black and whites!!!

chris_harper2 Jun 07, 2005 07:20 AM

I just got rid of my last Black @ Tan Janseni. While they did grow on my during the time I had them, I simply did not like them as much as either the G. oxycephala (either green or gray) or the Seleyar (black) Janseni. Maybe if I had kept them first my opinion would be different.

I like to keep large groups of any breeding project so I put my last female in the hands of a good friend of mine.

How many of those did you have, and do you know if they will be breed?

I saw some cb janseni for sale, I think they were green though.

>>How many of those did you have, and do you know if they will be breed?

I had seven at one point. They arrived in poor shape and I was only able to save one of them. I did lose some to the chloramine that is used to treat the water in our new home. I was told that it was not used, turns out I got bad info.

I'm sure someone will breed them. Keep in mind that even Europeans have a very difficult time with the Black & Tan Janseni. Given how many years ahead they are of us when it comes to breeding this genus I think that says a lot. But I truely believe it can and will happen.

>>I saw some cb janseni for sale, I think they were green though.

If they were green they were the Seleyar locale which grow up to be black. From everything I've heard the Celebes variety are born black and tan, just like the adults.

Those are the all black ones? I should get them then, should be easier to keep since they are cb. The all black ones are nice looking too, but they were rather expensive (expected I know). I do prefer the celebs though.

chris_harper2 Jun 08, 2005 07:24 AM

I just looked up the ad. Those are the Celebes type. Some of the adults there do have a greenish cast to them and the babies pictured do seem to have that. They are not truely green like the Black Janseni babies. Assuming we're talking about the same add.

Also, I'm guessing that the CB babies listed are captive born, not captive bred and born. In other words, they were hatched from eggs produced by gravid imports.

It should still mean a healthy and much easier to keep janseni, so I say go for it if you like them. And Ben Siegal is a great guy to deal with. One of my G. oxycephala came from Ben.

Yes, that's who it was. I think he also had cb oxycephala, and they were a lot cheaper than the janseni.
