Pool Plankton?

happycamper May 31, 2005 02:45 AM

I have secured several ounces of assorted exoskeletal beings from my pool. Beatles, moths, green roaches, flying ants and many unknown insects. I have frozen them after rinsing, in ziplock bags. Besides carcinogens from the environment, do I still need to be concerned about viruses, parasites or toxins from this trail mix? It sure looks nutritious!

ps...my veiled eats f/t worms/crickets/pinkies already

Interesting approach to feeding! My first three thoguths are:

1-if they were in your pool they will be saturated with chlorine
2-the chances of getting your cham to eat dead insects is unlikely
3- as for those "unknown"...if you are unsure what they are then you cannot know if they carry natural toxins (e.g. monarch butterflies, lightning bugs and many others.

You would also have to watch for any that had started to decompose before you froze them and/or as they thaw. Decomposition will bring along fungal spores and bacteria.

Btw, the nutritional value will be greatly reduced by freezing & insects have a tendency to turn to mush when thawed. I am sure others may have different opinions, but I would stick to live, chemical-free, known feeders.
