Chris,

Nice snake, a shame it was a DOR. What state did you find it in?

I would certainly check back in that area as there are surely hets around!

It's not really a het trait. It is dominant or co-dominant.Not sure.Great looking snake though.A.C. did you breed any of you CA redsides this year?

HerperHelmz Jun 01, 2005 04:43 PM

Tom,

I am pretty sure that erythristic can 'be a het trait'. A friend of mine bred a male erythristic eastern to a normal female, got 11 normal colored hets out of it.

But with flames, you get flames even if you breed flame X normal.

Here is some examples of flame x eyrthristic breedings. This one looks brown in the pic but in reality is brick red.

TomDickinson Jun 01, 2005 08:05 PM

If it was a het trait you would not get both types of traits. This flame actually shows both traits.

Chris Jones Jun 07, 2005 07:09 AM

...but not as nice as that DOR.

I was lucky to see it, I guess but I am still lamenting over the fact that it was DEAD.

Oh, well.

heterozygous dominant trait...i believe that is the term...when only one parent has the trait and it passes on to the offspring.

this year, I bred the melanistics, OR red spots, and the Cali red sides, and still waiting on the eastern blacknecks. None are noticeably gravid though. I'm liking those flames, but no time for baby garters right now. I'm going to hold out for someone selling a subadult pair.

Just get a 04 male flame(there is one in the classifieds right now) and feed it well, and it will easily breed next year. Breed it to a normal eastern female, and you will get flames.

Yeah I bred melanistic X melanistic easterns, and melanistic X NY blue eastern, and none are noticeably gravid yet either.

...in NC a few years ago.

I've been back subsequently but nothing as red as that.

You know how it goes....

First your $, then your clothes.

Glad to see you respond to this post. I saw your site and I dig someone creating morphs like that in gartersnakes.

Have you ever made anything that was THAT red in color?

If so, was it a sirtalis? And if so, do you have a picture?

Thanks for your time, man.

Chris,

I had a male that was from Ted Thompson that was extremely red and has unfortunately passed away not to long ago. I never did get pics of it, kick myself for not doing so.

Scott,

The snake in Chris' pics look just like a 'regular' erythristic eastern to me....

I agree. They seem to vary from brownish, purplelish, and red.Somebody posted a pic a while ago of a live snake very similar to the roadkill snake.

HerperHelmz Jun 01, 2005 08:12 PM

The one that BlueKing posted?

I'm actually about to get that specimen off the guy that BlueKing sold it to.

this one was on newspaper in a tupperware container.Lucky you if thats the one you are getting. Its a nice snake.

scott_felzer Jun 02, 2005 11:46 AM

Mike,

From the degree of red, the term "hypererythristic" seems to be appropriate.

Scott

scott_felzer Jun 04, 2005 04:55 PM

Pic of very nice erythristic eastern. This snake was more of a "candy apple" or bright orangish red versus maroon or chestnut. The latter colors seems to be more common for erythristics.
