Some one Help, I'm stuck on building my doors.

TheDrew1 May 31, 2005 05:22 PM

Hi, ive taken upon myself to build a very elaborate multi cage stack (1-1-2) for my bearded dragons. Each cage is 4'X2'X18" and there are three of them with the top one divided in two. Every thing has gone great so far with the beautiful melamine construction and the wiring for the lights but now im stuck on building doors. I really want an all glass door, no wooden frames or anything. I would use acrylic/plexiglass but with heat it bends and theres going to be a lot of heat in the cage. Also i really like the sliding glass doors but im having a lot of trouble building them. I bought two pieces of glass 12"x26" and my opening is 12"X48" but the glass barely fits. I cant use them as hinged doors because the glass isnt finished so the corners would be very sharp. Is there an easy way to cut glass, like a diamond cutter, so i can fit the pieces in the opening with the track. Does anyone have any advice on how to build glass sliding doors or know of a site where theres instructions.

Thanks for any help.

Acrylic can warp when exposed to heat differentials which may be significant in a bearded cage. Still, my biggest concern is scratching and I think you are correct in using glass.

What brand of track did you use? Most of the track I use suggests pieces of glass 7/16" shorter than the height of the rough opening before glass in installed. In other words, the height of the opening before the track is installed.

I would take the glass back to where you bought it and get it cut to the right height. If it's tempered you'll have to buy new glass.

Before you do that cut a piece of cardboard to determine the correct height.

You can get some info on sliding door installation at finegtps.com

Thanks, on that site (if its yours) where did you get those tracks or how did you make them?

Thanks

Not my site, but the cage building part is pretty good.

Glass track is available from DoItBest Hardware, Rockler.com, or Outwater plastics.
