New Orleans Area---Advice Sought for 2nd week of June

madmatt May 31, 2005 07:38 PM

Visiting the city for first time, hoping for advice on how and where to get out of town, also general herping techniques for one not familar with the gulf coast or the South for that matter. Just looking for diversity of reptiles, don't really care what I find but I would like to see as many different types of reptiles as possible.

I will have a rental car and not maybe one real day and night to poke around. I appreciate any and all input!!!

Be sure to hit the french quarter and eat at The Gumbo Shop. It is cheap and great. Also the aquarium of the americas is neat as well. Wife and I just went about 2 months ago. Didn't get to herp but had fun. Watch out for crime in the city (canal st).

Wish I could help more with the herping. So much swamp in the area I imagine you would find lots of Nerodia and Cotton Mouths.

Good luck on your trip. I hope you have a great time.

Take Care,

Steven

There is a nice boardwalk in the Jean Lafitte preserve. It has yielded cottonmouths, broad-banded waters, GC ribbons, gators, skinks, anoles, and lots of big bugs when I've been there.

there are a lot of herps there including a gator or 2. It is in between New Orleans and Slidell.
