spagham moss question

phiber_optikx Jun 01, 2005 01:09 AM

I set up a moss hide for hope and about 24 hours later it had white stringy mold looking filaments on it. I replaced it because I heard mold can cause a respiratory infection. My qustion is....was it mold or does spagham moss grow those naturally? The moss wasnt very wet....

What I would do would be to throw out the sphagnum moss and go down to the pet store and buy a compressed brick of coconut husk. Soak this in water and then squeeze it out and put it in there.

Actually this shows that you have nice organic sphagnum with no additives. It's not uncommon for sphagnum to start growing mycelium(the stuff that mushrooms grow from)I prefer sphagnum for my laying boxes and I just set up the box and moisten the sphagnum then "nuke" it for about a minute. That kills all the mushroom and mold spores and I've never had any issues this way.

I prefer perlite for the incubation boxes since long term in the sphagnum seems to discolor the eggs and I have no idea if that could be an issue.

Hope this helps.
