Bad Basking Lights

colorfulcritters Jun 01, 2005 08:27 AM

I just paid $40.00 for two Zoo Med 'Basking Spot Lamps.' I ordered them from a reptile website here overseas. They're dull and rather heatless.

I don't know if it's the make over here in Korea, where I bought them. But they don't suffice. I'm looking for a brighter and warmer light. I had one that was a Zoo Med before, and this one was only 75w but gave out more light and heat. Now I don't know what to do, but have put my turtles outside since it's summer.

Any helpful advice? Which lights are best? I want one that's warm and bright.

Capture sun, and Mega ray bulbs are good. Not sure if you can get them in Korea but they work well providing UVB and Heat at the same time. You need to use a ceramic lamp to hold the bulbs though. They can melt the plastic lamp sockets and risk causing a fire.

What about 'PowerSun?'

Powersun bulbs are okay too. The only thing is that of all the types I tried they seem to burn out the fastest. If I'm dropping 40 plus dollars on a Mercury vapor bulb I want it to last 6 months (which is pretty much when should replace them anyway). Not just a 8-10 weeks. Might have just been a bad experience but do like the Mega Rays best of all.
