scarlet king / eastern milk intergrade

hemingway Jun 01, 2005 01:22 PM

Hi there. I've seen discussion of the two species intergrading in NC and SC, with some really nice looking offspring. Is this a breeding project that anybody has undertaken in captivity? Is there a danger of aggression/predation between the species if one were to attempt it?

Thanks for your help.

Kris

You should post this in the "Milksnake" forum as both animals you are asking about are Milks...

Like Peter said, both of these are milk snakes.

But to answer your questions....

Scarlet Kingsnakes and Eastern Milk Snakes do intergrade in certain areas on the east coast. I am assuming you think that these two, create the extremely nice looking, Coastal Plains Milk Snake(L.t.temporalis)? They don't. Crossing a scarlet king and a eastern milk actually creates a pretty crappy looking snake. There are a few biologists out there working on proving that temporalis is their own sub-species.

There are a couple professionals out there working with coastal plains milk snakes, PWeaver is one of those, you can find him in the milk snake forum, his specimens are outstanding.
