U. Lineatus??

honuman Jun 01, 2005 06:50 PM

Hi --

I just got a pair of these beauties. I noticed no one posts much,if at all, about them. I keep Phantasticus and have a bunch of fertile eggs incubating. So I though I would give this specie and try and see how I do with them. Anyone keep them? Any other good tips or sites I can go to to see if I am missing anything in their set up or husbandry?

Thanks,
Steve

I'm working on a uroplatus site that'll have a lot of information. I'll let you know when I finish it.

main thing i would suggest is bamboo. this species loves bamboo. 1-2". they also like what i got referred to as " zebra" grass. i don't know if that's the actual name or not. some of it you can get at wal-mart or crafting stores. just make sure it's not dyed.
also, this species seems to be one of the more vulnerable to dehydration. i would highly suggest showering them everyday for the first week or two for 1/2 an hour at a time. after that every other day, or every third day should be fine.

I have bamboo in the set up already and have been really misting them down heavily twice daily. they do seem to drink alot more than my Phantasticus. I have some live plants that I am adding to the tank tonight and. So far I have seen the Female actively hunting that the male has shown interest though I have actually seen him eat. He is maintaining good weight and is defecating normally so I am sure he is eating -- Just a bit more shy about it.

i would really suggest trying to shower them. i was heavily misting cages 2-3 times a day, getting rid of water and maintaing the cage was a PITA. it is MUCH easier just to set up a bin with some fake vines and toss them in the shower with some room temp water....

Seriously, the shower is the best. It will work wonders.

doesn't do much for the smaller geckos but for the biggins it is awesome.

I have some snake plants in one of my cages and its great for them as well. I've noticed though they prefer some grass like plants more than anything else.

Hey, I would suggest that you put a water-fall in there cages and keep it running 24/7!

Thats what I do for my Henkeli and I will always see them drink and even jump in the water. I think that they like it because it is moving water and not standing in a bowl. Also if you mist them 2-3 times per day and keep the water fall running 24/7 you might not even have to "shower" them!! I didn't have to shower my lined leaf-tails when I did this and they were never dehydrated and were very active!!

I use vison water falls but I have used exo-terra water falls or you could use others or just build your own!

Hope that helps!! Thanks Erik

Erik,

assuming that the lineatus are wildcaught, and having dealt with about 60 uroplatus that were fresh imports, showering them is the "shot gun" method of rehydrating them. The lizards will not argue being showered upon because its more like what they are used to in the wild. Also, their natural instinct to drink during rain kicks in. Thats why I am so adamint (sp?) about showering. Now throw in there being wild caught animals... we are at my point.

thanks mr. dic-tionary. Mike I'll catch up with you about my pietschmanni this weekend. they are pretty, but hips are popping out like a size 15 versus a size 0 (I know the ladies on here will catch that one).

Showering them is not a problem for me to do but they aren't fresh imports. I they have been here for several months. they're not dehydrated and their tails look really great. Still if it can't hurt to shower 'em then I'll shower 'em.

yeah i dont have any waterfalls in any of my tanks, i used to, but theres really nuthin that wont drink from still water. Still water bowls are easier to clean too. i see my henkels and mossies drinkin from the water bowls every morning. i used to have a wild caught blue panther that drank from still water. i have water bowls in every cage, except for my standings.

I put together a preliminary caresheet for several species, including lineatus. You can find them here, you'll have to cut and paste:
