Herping on the Back 9

Over last weekend I had the pleasure to help out some U of Arizona scientists collect specimens for their research project. We were collecting on developed private property near Tucson with permission AND permits to collect anything we found! Okay the captives were pit-taged cataloged and released the next night but OH WHAT FUN! Here are a few pictures of some of the specimens we captured. Special Thanks to Chip who invited me along for the fun.

One of two Gila's (Heloderma suspectum) caught that night. Both were juvies: one was about 2 yrs and the other was a yearling. They were really not happy that they were spotted. Got to love these animals, they are so COOL!!!

We filled all of the snake bags that evening, last one with this critter. This one had been captured before, so they had data on this animal already. They told me they have over 100 Tigers tagged on this site. There are also, Atrox, Mojaves, and Blacktails too but none seen that night. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Cheers!

Thanks for the photos, that sounds like a great time. Dose anyone have any advice on how to locate Night snakes? I have tried several times in Eastern Oregon to find one to photograph with no luck. I read that thay can be found under rocks. Any help would be great. Thanks Dean

Dean:

The ones in the photos were caught out in the open. I found two different ones a few years ago under "things" on my Tucson property. Some luck is required...what else can you say.

My friend caught a night snake on a night drive in eastern washington around dusk, but they are few and far between this far north.
