Breeding season aggression question

GoldyGirl Jun 01, 2005 08:55 PM

Hi I have 2 male iguanas, one is 4 feet the other is about 2, anyway, the larger one is a rescue we found him in an abandoned house in the middle of winter. The larger one has been such a sweetheart so far, he'll come right out, even cuddle with me. I Got him out on Memorial Day to show a friend and I was holding him down by my waist and he jumped up, bit my cheek and fell and ran into the kitchen where I got him in a towel and put him back in his cage. Luckily he didn't get my face as good as he wanted to. I was just wondering if anything in particular would set him off and if there is any way to get my sweet Spencer back or do I Just have to wait it out..Thank you I appreciate any input

You have just experienced the "WRATH OF TESTOSTERONE"

There is nothing you can do. Some days will be better than others. Some days, you will feel like he has lost his mind...and in a way he has. He is maturing now, and hopefully you will see your once sweet iguana guy appear every so often.

Just watch his body language.

>>Hi I have 2 male iguanas,

Breeding season, if you're caring for them properly, is something that happens each year at about the same time, starting when the igs reach 18 months of age. Poor care can result in delaying on onset of sexual maturity, so while you may be able to sex the rescue, he may not yet have had his first breeding season.

Breeding season with one sexually mature male can be a trial to the humans around them. Okay, to the iguana, too, but that's different.

Having two sexually mature males can be extremely tricky. Having more is insane (as well I know, as at one time, I had 17 of them here, though fortunately only two of them considered me their mate).

Please read my Breeding Season Basics article and the ones linked to it. While you can't stop the season, and can't stop all the craziness, you can reduce the likelihood of you or any other human or animal getting severely bitten to the point of needing to develop a close personal relationship with your local reconstructive and plastic surgeons.

You need also to be aware of the problems housing more than one ig in the same house. Check out my Housing Multiple Iguanas and Lizard Tough Guys articles for more information.

Good luck!
