Care and Maintence of a Ball Python.

Bammer Jul 13, 2003 07:26 AM

I was pondering adopting an adult ball python. Most are eating dead, or frozen/thawed mice. I just wanted to know if I have the set up right. Is this ok,

-A 20 gallon(too small?)
-Heating pad one one side, probally light on too during the winter.
-Water bowl
-Soil, I use that nice bed a beast stuff, and moss
-2 hide boxes
-thermometers (warm side should be 85-92?)

and maybe a plant and stick if I have some....

Just making sure I have the care down. I have 7 other snakes including boa constrictors, amazon tree boas, a kenyan sand boa, and a adult tawiwan beauty snake.

Thanks for your time

I'd use a 40 gallon breeder tank if you want it to look nice. Balls don't require much humidity so the moss would be unnecesary, and make sure that you keep the substrate dry. You may want to add a hide box of the appropriate size, and of course, the water dish should be large enough for the snake to soak in, and not easy to tip. As far as plants and sticks, that's a personal choice. Keep in mind that balls are heavy bodied and tend to flatten or knock down things that are not well anchored down. Probably shouldn't use live plants if only because the snake will uproot, and crush anything on the ground.
