Success w/ regalis

Got the regal on April 28th. Measured the snake, sexed it, 19" female, with no ring of unknown locality. Purchased from Regal Reptiles. The snake came in on a shipment towards the end of 2004, 1 of the regals in the shipment, was bought by Dan on these forums(thanks to me lol), the other one, escaped. I contacted Regal and asked them if they could get anymore in, and they said they had just found the one that escaped. So I bought it.

The snake ate the day I got it, which seems to happen easily with regals. It ate a 7" shorthead garter snake on that first day, and a 9.5" shorthead on May 3rd. On May 11th she ate a 10" shorthead. On May 21st she ate a 9" shorthead garter. A couple times between then, and now, I have offered her multiple prey items, mainly small(5"eastern garter snakes, live, and live shortheads, no takes.

I picked her up about a week ago, to give her water. When I give my "small snakes" water, I take them out of their enclosure, and hold them above a bowl of fresh cool water, the regal will drink for up to 5 minutes, once a week. Anyways, when I picked her up, I checked her for eggs(hey, ya never know), and let's put it this way, she is either gravid, or ovulating(too bad I have no male ). She could've always retained sperm from a previous breeding....time will tell.

Her enclosure, is a 20 quart rubbermaid container, with half an inch of aspen bedding, a thermometer, and a single sheet of newspaper to hide under. The container sits on a heat pad, which is turned on if the temperature outside is 70 degrees or below, which will give the enclosure a nice low 80 degrees temperature.

Last night, I offered her another live shorthead, 13" long, she didn't eat it. So today, I decided I would give f/t a shot, which I have failed miserably with countless times with regalis. I put a 8.5" eastern milk snake 3/4 under the newspaper, and left the tail sticking out(so I could tell if she ate it).

She ate it.

Nice looking snake.Dont post that pic in kingsnake forum tho lol. Could different types of ringnecks breed?
I imagine that might be nice to.

Different sub-species of ringneck snakes do intergrade. I stay away from intergrades, and I personally dislike intergrade snakes.

In CA, 3 sub-species of ringneck snakes intergrade, making a positive ID could be difficult if a specimen from that area was found and no one knew of the intergrades. In Texas, regal ringneck snakes and prairie ringneck snakes intergrade, which is not good, because it makes them smaller. Also in TX, mississippi ringnecks and prairie ringnecks mix, and on the east coast, northern ringnecks and southern ringneck snakes mix(in MA, and NC, SC and GA.

Picture of a Northern X Southern Ringneck snake intergrade. This snake was found in an area where only southern ringneck snakes were supposed to be. This snake is 20" long, the record length southern is 18". But due to the intergrade with northerns, this new record does not count.

Some intergrades look neat tho why dont you like them? I saw your post about scarlet kings and milks i saw one for sale while ago it was pretty.

Pure ringneck snakes always look better than intergrades.

Not that it matters much, all ringneck snakes more or less are the same. Pure regal ringneck snakes look better than the crappy intergrades with prairie ringnecks.

Intergrading messes up diet, size and patterns.

I truly hate intergrades lol.

Eve'n.... everyone..

Im not convinced that regalis intergrades w/ anything else in Diadophis...While I wouldnt seperate regalis from dugesii or "docilis"; both regal-like mexican highland forms...
I'm just not there, mainly because I havent seen it w/ prairies. The N & S w/ red & yellow tail venters...Id need to see to believe too...

Cheers, JG
