Just out of curiosity, how dangerous is this species?
I have no intentions of keeping them but seem to remember that this was one of the snakes that Austin Stevens got tagged by with little damage.
Thanks

phobos Jun 02, 2005 02:34 PM

Austin Stevens was almost bitten by Bitis peringueyi inb that show. C. cerastes has a serious bite but it's seldom fatal if untreated. There are specific Antivenoms available but the venom can be neutralized with Echis antivenom.

Cheers!

Al

Thanks for the reply.
So when you say death is not likely are we talking systemic symptoms or localized swelling/pain/necrosis? I realize all people are different so let's eliminate allergic reaction or anaphylaxis from the equation and make the unfortunate subject of this theoretical bite a healthy adult male with no underlying health conditions.
Once again, not interested in keeping them but quite interested in the results of envenomation.
Thanks again

Hi:

Very seldom will local effects caus a complication that will be fatal, so I am talking about the systemic effects. I am not sure of the specific compounds it is mixture of procoagulants. It's overall effect is like the venom of Echis, this could by why the Echis antivenom is said to be effective.

Best,

Al

How much do these buets go for?

west Jun 07, 2005 03:39 AM

Can I see more pics?

They are cost between $80 & $125. They are really great animals, one of the easiest keepers out there. They do have a very aggressive feeding response, so beware.
