Merauke vs Aru

5rings Jun 02, 2005 09:40 AM

I have seen an explosion of Meraukes being advertised on KS. Some have a fine clean line of single white scales down their backs and bits of blue sprinkled about. Others have broken or irregular white lines and various amounts of blue. I have what has been labeled an Aru that looks just like many of the Meraukes advertised. I am not interested in buying one, and no I dont care what anybody labels MY snakes. I like them whatever name we give them. I am only trying to educate myself as to what-is-what out there in the scary world of reptile peddlers. How can one safely tell the difference or is there really a difference?

p.s. Thanks for the info/advice on my sick GTP. I think she is trying to play hooky from school and is faking it to upset me. She is as fit as a fiddle.

in the CB Meraukes we are noticing that the stripe is not solid... although all the ones that are WC are...
to my knowledge we dont know why this is happening...
the adults that are WC dont loose their stripe when kept in a collection, but they keep producing babies that have spotting similar to an Aru... as u stated...
i know you said you are not looking for one, but to answer the question properly......... the only real way to be sure you are getting what you want it to go through a breeder that has a good reputation... CB is the way to go...

and by the way... welcome to the community... u should start making room for a few more now... u cant have just one... trust me... i started with one and now i have a serious addiction... i need help... lol

Hi 5rings--
Yes, you are correct in noting the "higher" than usual abundance of Meraukes being advertised on KS. Note that a good number of these being advertised share common pictures yet from different "brokers", so in actually there are not as many present as there may seem to be. And you are correct in that there are many "peddlers" out there...but also take a good look at the "quality' of these animals being offered for sale. At least 'some" of the brokers are being fair and honest in noting that many have scares or skin blemishes. Trust me...the HOT ones are not being released

To address your question regarding the stripes.....just like in a High Yellow X High Yellow breeding, not all the members in the clutch will result in a high yellow adult. The same holds for the stripe in Meraukes (from what I have seen). True, the odds are better with finely striped animals breeding to finely striped ones....I have noted a number of broked striped animals in F1 generations...what will be very interesting is how these F1's will do and what they will yeild in their F2's and F3's.

When viewed juxtaposed to one another, there are significant differences that stand out between Arus and Meraukes....body coloration is just one.

Rich & Shiloh

Thanks for the info. I have noticed that the Meraukes tend to have a more lime green coloration. I really didnt want to buy one, I dont really see the $$$ in them, but as Rich pointed out I probably havent seen the good ones.

I normally spend a bit of time on the blood python page. I have a pretty good collection of bloods and I am really just starting my GTP collection. I currently have 6 and I am looking for the intestinal fortitude (that translates to money) to dive into the high-end market. I'll monitor the discussion group and learn what I can before I jump in over my head. I appreciate your advice and candor.

Thanks again

Steve
