Uromastyx a good pet?

cammyleon Jun 02, 2005 09:46 AM

I have had a bearded dragon for about about 6-7 years now and he's doing great and really easy to take care of, but I want a different lizard that is somewhat simular to a bearded dragon as far as care goes. Would a Uromastyx be a good choice or would you suggest something different? Thanks a lot!

i don't really know much about beardies but i love uros. if you want to read more about them, go to deerfernfarms.com there is alot of good information there. i don't think you would be disappointed with a uro, though

None of mine are overly fond of being held, but they all have great personalities! Most aren't really "lap lizards" (as someone was asking about earlier), though there are exceptions to that. They have such high heat requirements, they can't be out of their cage TOO much unless you live somewhere really hot.

All in all, I love them! The beardies I've known (never owned one) were much more mellow and sedentary - uros are very alert, curious, and busy much of the time. Wonderful personalities and generally very sweet. Even my "wild" pair aren't aggressive - they just won't let me near them.

The care sheet recommended by Vonnie (deerfernfarms.com) goes over general personality tendencies of the commonly available species, so you can decide what kind will likely fit you the best.

Honestly, I don't know what that particular one was. My local health food store gets weird stuff in from time to time. I got it that one time and have never seen it again. I think it was some variety of something I often get, but I don't remember what it was.

haha~
because I thinck the fresh leaves is a little like one kind of plant in my country(Taiwan). It's very commomly found in our mountain, and some people also take it as important food source.
but if it is the same plant, that's may be a kind of lettuce.but the shape of leaves seems like another species of silk : ).

By the way, your Uro seemed very happy and healthy.^^~

Thank you! I wish I could find the greens again - the uros liked them very much. I had a nibble, too, and they were pretty tasty.

We thoroughly enjoy our uromastxy. Currently my wife is working with 5 species of them. We have some that are more skitish and would rather be left alone. We also have a pair (Chip and Dale) that if you put your hand on the edge of the cage, they will climb up your arm to sit on your shoulder. I haven't found that to be the norm for uromastyx though.

I believe that uromastyx are more intelligent than bearded dragons. They seem much more exploratory and curious than dragons when allowed to free roam (supervised periods).
