Removing fish hook from large snapper

SalS Jun 02, 2005 11:02 AM

I recieved a phone call today asking me how to get a fishing hook out of a "large alligator snapper". From the description on the phone it sounds more like a common snapper. The man told me it weighs about 20 pounds and the hook (single hook) is lodged in its throat.

Any ideas how to get it out? He's tried pliers but is worried about getting bit.

not everyone has them, but if you do 18 inch feeding tongs or forcepts would work but even then just dont forget caution

I would say get the turtle cold so it slows down....but mine are active even when the ice on their pools is frozen over.

The only other thing I can think of, which is probably the best thing, is to take the turtle to a vet and have it anesthetized.
